How to complete Companies House ID verification

Step 1: Prepare your documents

You’ll need valid ID, such as:

  • UK biometric passport

  • UK photo driving licence

  • UK biometric residence permit or card

  • UK Frontier Worker permit

You’ll also need your current address and the year you moved in.

Step 2: Set up GOV.UK One Login

Each individual must have their own GOV.UK One Login account, with a unique email address.

Step 3: Choose your verification route

  1. Direct with Companies House – complete the process online, through the app, or partly in person at a Post Office. This option is free.

  2. Through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) – such as your accountant or solicitor. They will carry out the checks and may charge a fee.

Step 4: Receive your Companies House personal code

After successful verification, you’ll be issued a personal code. Keep this safe – it will be required for future filings.

Step 5: Submit your code at the right time

  • Directors – include your code with your confirmation statement or new appointment.

  • PSCs – submit your code within your allocated 14-day window.

What happens if you don’t verify?

Failure to verify means:

  • You cannot make filings or register a new company.

  • Acting as a director without verification may be a criminal offence.

  • You could face disqualification or financial penalties.

Quick compliance checklist

  • Identify all directors, PSCs and LLP members in your organisation.

  • Ensure each has a GOV.UK One Login with a unique email.

  • Gather acceptable photo ID documents.

  • Complete verification early to avoid last-minute delays.
